Graduation Song: You Raise Me Up - Josh Gorban Version

I think Josh Gorban is one of the best young soloists. I love his voice. He's added a new level or depth to "You Raise Me Up". Just watch this music video - probably one of the best graduation songs that's going to become a classic.

How to Plan for Graduation at the Begining of the School Year

There's not a better time to think about Graduation than the time when you're going back to school or starting out in college. It is the most exciting time of the year and you can plan so many things -- including your graduation ahead of time. Eastern Oregon University has a check list for most majors. Ask around if your college or university has a checklist for graduation. The best places to ask are at the registrar's office and your department's office. Most likely they will have it if they don't have that you can make one yourself.

Here's a couple of questions to get you started on making your own graduation check list:

  • What is the minimum credit hours required overall?
  • What is the GPA required overall?
  • What is the minimum credit hours required for course work?
  • Are there any university/college writing requirements? What are they? (They can be tests, exams, term papers etc.)
  • What are the required courses for your specific major?
  • Are there any minor courses you're taking? What are they and what are their requirements?
  • What are your major's elective courses? Which ones are you taking?
  • Are there any other major/minor requirements for your degree? Write them down.
  • Are there any other program (BS/BA) requirements?
  • Check if you're qualified for honors. (You can even plan this ahead and make sure you qualify.)
  • Calculate your credit hours and/or mark them as DONE at the end of each semester.
  • When should you file for graduation? What's the deadline? Check in with your registrar.
Once you're done check in with a professor from your department or the best would be to check in with the head of department. They can tell you what you're missing.

Checklists are great when you can do them at the start of your college because you can set your goals and objectives. By the end of each semester or trimester you can check in on which courses you've completed and which courses you still need to do. This way you're geared towards your next enrollment and won't be stressed out with which course to choose. You can even be ahead of the crowd and get into the class you really want.

Have a great time back in school!

Send Canada Day Greetings To Your Graduate Friends

On June 20, 1868, a proclamation signed by the Governor General, Lord Monck, called upon all Her Majesty's loving subjects throughout Canada to join in the celebration of the anniversary of the formation of the union of the British North America provinces in a federation under the name of Canada on July 1st.

The July 1 holiday was established by statute in 1879, under the name Dominion Day.

There is no record of organized ceremonies after this first anniversary, except for the 50th anniversary of Confederation in 1917, at which time the new Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings, under construction, was dedicated as a memorial to the Fathers of Confederation and to the valour of Canadians fighting in the First World War in Europe.

The next celebration was held in 1927 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Confederation. It was highlighted by the laying of the cornerstone by the Governor General of the Confederation Building on Wellington Street and the inauguration of the Carillon in the Peace Tower.

Since 1958, the government has arranged for an annual observance of Canada's national day with the Secretary of State of Canada in charge of the coordination. The format provided for a Trooping the Colours ceremony on the lawn of Parliament Hill in the afternoon, a sunset ceremony in the evening followed by a mass band concert and fireworks display.

Another highlight was Canada's Centennial in 1967 when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II attended the celebrations with Parliament Hill again being the backdrop for a large scale official ceremony.

The format changed in 1968 with the addition of multicultural and professional concerts held on Parliament Hill including a nationally televised show. Up until 1975, the focus of the celebrations, under the name "Festival Canada", was held in the National Capital Region during the whole month of July and involved numerous cultural, artistic and sport activities, as well as municipalities and voluntary organizations. The celebration was cancelled in 1976 but was reactivated in 1977.

A new formula was developed in 1980 whereby the National Committee (the federal government organization charged with planning Canada's Birthday celebrations) stressed and sponsored the development of local celebrations all across Canada. "Seed money" was distributed to promote popular and amateur activities organized by volunteer groups in hundreds of local communities. The same approach was also followed for the 1981 celebrations with the addition of fireworks displays in 15 major cities across the nation.

On October 27, 1982, July 1st which was known as "Dominion Day" became "Canada Day".

Since 1985, Canada Day Committees are established in each province and territory to plan, organize and coordinate the Canada Day celebrations locally. Grants are provided by the Department to those committees.

Wish all your Graduating Friends specially your Canadian College buddies a happy Canada day on July 1st

Celebrating Graduations: Looking Back and Stepping Forward!

Welcome to the June 4th, 2007 edition of Celebrating Graduations - Graduation Blog Carnival!

The theme for this carnival is "Looking Back and Stepping Forward". I really have to thank Rick Sincere who posted about May 22, 1977, which he wrote is "A reminiscence of my own high school graduation 30 years ago ..." A big thanks also goes to Ted Reimers who gives us CampusGrotto - Advice for Freshman Year saying "Here is some advice for high school graduates going on to college."
The biggest step taken forward are those of the graduating class of 2007. Bobby Cohoon had the privilege of attending the graduation of kindergarten class 20007 and talks about Graduation Day on Here in the Real World. Many thanks to Bobby Cohoon!

That concludes this edition of Celebrating Graduations. I'll be doing an additional carnival post as there are loads of posts that were submitted. If you want to contribute to the carnival please submit your blog article to the next edition of

Life After Graduation: Your Career

I love reading Alison Doyle who is About.com's Guide to Job Searching And she wrote that there's a lot of career options for college senior graduating in 2007. The stories of the graduates range from going to work on a horse farm , to being Cinderella at Disney World, planting trees in Guatemala and starting finance careers on Wall Street.

Celebrating Graduations - Commencement

Welcome to the May 28, 2007 edition of Celebrating Graduations - Graduation Blog Carnival!

I have the first entry for this week from TherapyDoc who wrote that "There really is a difference between them, you know." aboutCommecement at Every One Needs Therapy.
It's a really fitting post to start this blog carnival and big THANKS! to Therapy Doc. So without further ado, here's his post...

The truth? Graduation's a real trick box for me.

I missed every one of my own except for 8th grade. I graduated high school early and college late (with free housing and tuition, wouldn't you?)

Both the Master's and the PhD ceremonies at the University of Illinois took place on Saturdays.

So over the years I've made it my business to go to these things when I could, make a presence in the school auditoriums, bleachers and gyms. True, it wasn't easy sitting through the many leaps into eternity, but having a pager (in the days before cell phones we had pagers) it was easy to excuse myself to find a phone.

Therapy docs can get pretty busy, especially when someone's giving a speech.

Send this Happy Graduation eCard !

I love the costumes at these things, the robes, the tassels, the sashes, the ropes. I love the idea of 4,000 kids throwing their black caps into the air at the same time. I love seeing the college kids strutting and smiling, parents snapping pictures, getting it all on videotape. And there's the pride, the mutual sense of sacrifice (parents pay, pay, pay, for kids to learn, learn, learn). And the sheer press of humanity trying desperately to fill a football stadium or a basketball dome, knowing that without cell phones we'd all be separated in the throng forever (meet me at the top of the stairs outside to the left, past the turtle).

I love that the stadium is at capacity with people doing the right thing, suffering through the pomp and circumstance because their kids shouldn't have to go it alone. Nah, my parents couldn't make it. As children of a 2 working-parent household, my kids said that so many times. I came in late to so many school plays and I missed many, many things.

I love looking at the faces, mainly, and the clothes, the polyester, the silk, the leather, and the hair! The gray hair of the middle-aged juxtaposed against the long, jet black or brunette, blond locks of youth.

I just love the SCENE. I'm not even going to tell you how much I love a college campus, almost any college campus, and how red brick buildings drug me senselessly.

F.D., on the other hand, hates these things. We went to our son and daught-in-law's graduation at the University of Maryland yesterday.

"I hate these things," F.D. moaned.

D-I-L's mother: "I can think of a million things I'd rather be doing and should be doing. Can't you?"

Uh, no.

But again, I usually don't sit through the whole thing. I get up, I make calls. I walk around the entire periphery of the building. I look for art work, plaques. I read names.

And afterwards I still get to see the kids laughing and smiling, smacking those high fives with their friends.

Sunday night I DID sit through the whole thing. I sat through the WHOLE thing and IT WAS DREADFUL. The speeches were really horrible. So, so boring, and the one speech that could have been good, the one about selflessness and leadership rubbed me wrong. How could he tell us how selfless he is? Is it selfless to say you're selfless? I don't know. All I could do was shake my head.

This brought up the inevitable question, Could you, TherapyDoc, do a better job? Could you give a decent commencement speech?

No, I thought, probably not.

Oh, heck. Why not give it a try? What have we got to lose?

It's almost finished, actually.
